Bud, West Virginia- It’s cause for celebration in Bud, West Virginia this week. The town of 308 residents saw the grand opening of their third Dollar Store last Thursday. The festivities kicked off that morning when a slew of Bud citizens camped out in tents that lined the front of the store. As the doors opened and customers rushed in that morning, Mayor Jim Dale Wilson joined the Dollar Store staff in a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a chili cookoff. “We ain’t never been this excited for nothin ‘round here like we are for this store,” Wilson said in a speech following the wheelbarrow races at the town park. “Ain’t nothin better than bein’ able to get stuff conveniently for a dollar at three differ’nt places in town!” He exclaimed to an eruption of applause. The day winded down with the spectacle of the day, the Dollar Store celebratory parade and a fireworks display.
“We sure are proud of our town here in Bud,” the mayor explained to our TOA reporters. “Now each of our stores is within walkin’ distance from anyone’s house in town,” he continued, “‘Cept farmer Dalton’s house up the highway, we might need to get a fourth dollar store for him someday.” After our chat with the mayor, the TOA staff was able to reach out to Dollar Store CEO Mark Mattix. When we asked him what his thoughts were behind a third location for such a small town, he stated, “Our overall goal as a company is to have at least one location for every 50 to 100 people, and I’m talking nationally here,” he continued, “Bud is a great place to test this approach. Mayor Wilson and I have had a great relationship and he has assured me that the citizens of Bud are definitely some of the cheapest and laziest people on earth, and that’s also backed up by our numbers there. The first two locations in Bud are record-setting stores and we don’t expect anything less from this third location.”
Mattix also told the TOA staff that they are planning a future partnership with Starbucks. “It will be a split-store concept, similar to Cracker Barrel, where you can get your needs from the Dollar Store all while getting your coffee. It’s a win-win for everyone.” The TOA team will keep you posted on any developments from Mattix on this massive partnership.
