Lufkin, TX- It wasn’t how Martin Friedman thought his Friday night would end last week. It started out just like any other Friday for Martin and his co-workers; cut out of the office early and get over to the local Applebee’s for their cheap appetizers and happy-hour beer specials.
“We do it every Tuesday and Friday,” explained Jed Sutterman, one of Martin’s closest friends, “We’re all always very responsible when it comes to drinking and driving.” Sutterman explained that police officers have been known to steakout across the street from Applebee’s and get people as they pull out of the parking lot.
“Some of the Lufkin police officers can be ruthless,” Sutterman said, “Hell, they pulled over an entire family and arrested the parents and the kids one night.” Rumor has it that that family was sneaking alcohol to their kids, others say that the police department arrested them simply for eating at Applebee’s, but the family moved away and was never heard from again so the mystery remains.
However, some light could be shed on that mystery as Martin Friedman was released on bail early Saturday morning and said that he was arrested for “eating at Applebee’s” he told his attorney. His attorney told our Offended American staff that Martin was drinking but was not over the legal limit. He explained that the cops have been arresting people for going to Applebee’s as the chain is “not what it used to be” (a quote straight from the Lufkin sheriff's office).
When our staff contacted Sheriff Lane Bartley’s office they declined to comment much further but added that Applebee’s is trash and that they are considering it a crime to eat there. We’re pretty sure that’s not legal and Texas authorities are looking into it. However, there is a petition to make it a law not to eat at Applebee’s anywhere in Texas. We’ll keep you updated.
