10. Theater Arts
So, you want to be an actor, huh? You want to deal out thousands and thousands of dollars for at least 4 years just to learn to perform in front of people? Here’s a thought. Don’t do that. What you can do is get a job as a waiter/bartender/etc., get your smartphone, buy some props and a background, then start an account on TikTok, YouTube, or your favorite vlogging app and record yourself. It’s simple and you’re making money instead of spending it.
9. Languages
I know, you’re probably appalled that this made the list, but let’s be real folks, how many jobs exist out there that require a specified “languages” degree? You want to be a translator? Okay, get Rosetta Stone. That will cost you about what a spanish book will cost for one single class. Would you like to work in an embassy in a foreign country? Great! Minor in a language. Just stop the insanity of spending 4 years studying a language you could learn in the car on the way to McDonald’s.
8. Ethnic and Civilization Studies
Okay, hear me out all you social justice warriors–I am all about progress and talking about how to improve things racially and ethnically in this country, so get out of your safe space to read this one. If you're not majoring in this for virtue signaling purposes, why are you majoring in this? You’re probably studying this to get into education, counseling, or social work–the kicker is the fact that all of these receive a special degree of their own. If you must, use this major as a minor unless you just want people to think you’re woke.
7. Culinary Arts
Cool, you enjoy cooking? Go to a special school for two years and get on with life. Why would you go to a 4-year university to study culinary arts and waste all that money? Next.
6. Creative Writing
I love creative writing. It is something that has been a passion and talent of mine since I was a kid. I want to write creatively until the day I die. I do not want to spend the time and money at a school to learn what comes naturally to me. What is the end-game with this degree? You want to write a novel? Publish some stories? Awesome, me too! I’m working on a book, magazine articles, and blogs right now that pay me pretty well. I studied Political Science and dropped out of school. Quit school and go find writing jobs on Upwork.
5. Botany
The study of plants. No more explanation needed here.
4. Communications
Alright, so to make this major seem legit, universities describe it as “The science behind communication” as if that makes it anymore worthwhile. If you have not learned how to properly communicate by the age of 18 or 19, or if you don’t understand how humans communicate, school is likely not your thing. Might try out a manual labor job.
3. Art History
This should just be obvious, but I will elaborate. Art history essentially teaches you how to distinguish and analyze works of art and architecture. You’re basically learning how to be a person who knows a lot about the way things look. Are you studying this to be the most knowledgeable person on a trip to Italy? Because I can guarantee it’s not to develop a sustainable career.
2. Travel and Tourism
No offense to our travel and tourism majors reading this, I love to travel, but study it for 4 years? I’ll pass. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t even take the time out of my day to look up what you study in these classes, but surely it can’t be anything you can’t learn by renting a van and traveling across the country for a few weeks. Also, if your parents are paying for school, what is their reaction when you say, “I’m following my dream of going to school to study travel and tourism”? You’re mom and dad might as well throw money out the window.
1. Entrepreneurship
I consider myself an entrepreneur. Always have. I, along with most entrepreneurs, have always had a passion for being an outcast, never liked to follow the crowd. I want to create and teach others from mistakes I’ve made, I want to build something that has never been seen before. So please, please tell me how in the world you teach entrepreneurship at a university? Learning entrepreneurship at a school is the definition of an oxymoron.
